Fairy Tales By: Berlie Doherty

Berlie Doherty the author of this book has written in one book all the fairy tales that I enjoyed when I was little. The book has 12 fairy tales:

I know most of the stories but I have never heard about The Wild Swans or The Fire Bird. I liked the story Cinderella the most and not just that I like the way she has written the story she indeed used lots of adjectives in all the 12 stories.

About Berlie Doherty:

Berlie Doherty born 6 November 1943 Liverpool UK. She is best known for her children's books, for which she has twice won the Carnegie Medal. This is the first book I am reading of hers I hope I find other books that Berlie Doherty has writen so I can read them. I really enjoyed this book and I recomend this for people who are interested in Fairy Tales.

Hansel and Gretel

Hansel and Gretel was my best folktale when I was small. The funny part for me was When the witch got pushed in the fire. But I love all other folktales too: everything is so fun. Hansel and Gretel was my best folk tale because I loved the happy end the best.


But now my best books are Jaqueline Wilson.

Rapunzel

Rapunzel is a story about a girl who was stolen by a witch! She was locked up in a very tall, tall tower. Eventually she was rescued by a prince.

I like this story becauseI loved it when I was little,beacause I thought the witch was mean, cruel and cool. And I always wanted to read it again and again. I also LOOOOVE Jacqueline Wilson, beacause I think she has a lot of humour in her books and exciting stuff happens all the time. You just CAN'T STOP READING!!!! I thought Rapunzel had fasanating pictures in her book and thats why I wanted to read it so often.I also like and hate Rumpelstiltskin.I hate it beceause I think it was really wierd and freaky, but I think the bit when he stamps he's foot rhight through the floor is really cool.

The Six Swan Brothers

This is a folk story which I have recently read at home, and it is quite a good one! The main characters are the Six Swan Brothers and their beloved sister. Their father is a king. Unfortunately the step-queen sends the children away from their father - which is a bit like Hansel and Gretel. I think it is really harsh that the step-mother sends away the princess's babies and then blames it on the princess. I also think that she is a really mean queen.

I have read another version of this story that has a few differences, like the way the princess gets her brothers back to being human again.

I hope I shall read other books written by this author.

Little Red Riding Hood

Little Red Riding Hood is a fairy tale book and it is a very good one. It is a fairy tale that I like best because it is so simply written and it is easy to understand. I hope I shall read another book like this another day some day.

The Magic Bottle

Once upon a time there was a very poor family that lived in the wild. One freezing night in winter a disaster took place. All of the potatoes rotted and the cabbages rotted too. This was a disaster. Does this story have a happy ending? What do you think?

The Simple Giant

There was a village and there lived a woman who lived with a cat.
There was a good ship sark.
They heard a cries from far ahead.
They saw a boy. They pulled him up into the sark.
One person said, "Throw him off! He might bring bad luck."
The captain said I will take him home with me.
This boy grew into a giant and everybody teased him.

Grey Wolf, Prince Jack and the Firebird

This story is about a prince whose father (the king) has a tree with golden apples. The apples are getting stolen, so the king wants his sons to guard his tree so he can catch the thief. The youngest prince is the only one who gets any evidence. He finds a fiery feather. He knows this comes from the fiery phoenix that is owned by the King of the Copper Castle.

The prince rides on horseback to steal the fiery phoenix. As he’s trying to steal it, he gets caught by the King of the Copper Castle. The king who caught him will let him go if he steals a golden horse from the King of the Iron Castle. When trying to steel the horse, the prince gets caught by the King of the Iron Castle. This man wants a princess to marry. On his travels an amazing grey wolf guides the prince and serves him along the way.

Overall Rating: 3 out of 5

I would recommend reading this book.

Beowulf and the Monster

This story starts like a common one, there is peace and there are no wars.So they have a massive feast and they are singing and there is drinking,eating and all that noise booms and breaks the silence at the marsh there's a mysterious figure groaning towards the noise. The horrible monster slowly rose to his feet and roared as loud as he could suddenly he started walking towards the big feast. When night fell, the broke in to the big hall and full l of fury eat all the guards and left a big bloo trail leading back to the swamp. Sadly I couldn't finish the book in time, but I did enjoy the bit I read.

Yallery Brown

This is a strange tale because it does not have a moral. However this is a really good book, with lots of surprises.You might know the author Mick Gowar. I think he's a good author,with lots of expression and feeling.
Yallery Brown is a classic folk tale about a young boy who works on a farm,but his real home is in the village. Every Saturday he goes to the village on a long path which goes around the big wood.One day he went to his house at the village and because he was late he took the short cut through the forest where he meets a magical creature...

The Musicians of Bremen

There was a donkey called long ears, he had always been a server but the years passed and long ears was getting older and tired, the donkey did not serve to work and the owner wanted to sell him, the poor long ears was very sad.

"So this is how he pays many years of service, I'll go to the city of Bremen and there I will work as a musician."

He travelled to the road and on the way he met a dog, the donkey asked him, "Why are you here so sad?"

"Well, my owner drives me from home because he says I dont run as before and don't serve to hunt."

"Then come with me. I go to Bremen to become town musician."

"I would love to." And the dog accompanied the donkey. Then they met a sad cat. The cat said that the farmer says I don't serve to hunt mice because I am too old and the farmer did not want him.

Then they met a cock, the donkey asks him why are you here singing in the morning? the cook says that trying to sing because if not my owner will cook me.

The cock went with them to Bremen.

On the way they found a house in the forest but there were thieves. Then prepared a plan to enter in the house. They climbed one above the other and began to sing, then the thieves frightened got scared and left the house. They went into the house and spent the night. The next day they were all happy to be Bremen to be musicians.

Tale of the Sands

Everyone knows it but I can still tell the Tale of the Sands:

When one Stream is passing desert sands as fast as it could it realised it would be swallowed up by the sand and unable to pass through.
Then what would happen if the stream let her vapour fly with the wind?

The Stream's water is sinking. What will it do?

The sand tells him about letting yourself fly with the wind but the Stream doesn't understand so he asks another question: 'Will I remain the same Stream that I am now?'

The answer is no. Suddenly the Stream remembers that he had been all ready passed the sand by letting the wind carry him in it's arms and take him to a mountain.

The Stream stops and let itself get carried by wind and to moutain and turn into a new Stream again.The sand answers and says, 'We know about this because we see and we see it every time this happens. We are here still watching'.

The Stream was being greedy, he only wants himself in his life he doesn't want anybody to do help him like the wind.

Most people in class had the same change as the Stream had: they changed school they came from different country or even a different continent - Africa, Asia, Australia, or maybe Europe, but from diffrent places in France or another country.

The Grey Wolf, the Fire Bird and Prince Jack

In the book a king has an apple tree and every night an apple is stolen so he gets his sons help him find out who is the thief . There is a moral to the story but I won't tell you what it is.

I really enjoyed this book.

The Snow Queen

This book was written by Berlie Doherty based on the famous story told by Hans Christian Andersen. He was a very famous storyteller who wrote many famous stories we know now, including “The Ugly Duckling”, “Thumbelina”, “The Steadfast Tin Soldier” and “The Little Match Girl”. He was born on April 2 1805 in Denmark, and he died on August 4 1875 in Denmark near Copenhagen .

This book starts off with slimy imps that made a mirror. But this mirror was like no other mirror because it reflected the evil heart of those who looked into it. Now those imps dared each other to show it to the most beautiful creature on earth , The Snow Queen. The queen loved mirrors and tossed her hair around admiring her beauty but kept seeing her evil heart in the mirror. She became furious and smashed it into little pieces. The bits flew up into the night sky turning into dust and landing in people’s hearts turning them to ice. The imps cackled and sped off into their slimy holes. Now the same thing happened to two friends Kay and Gerda. Kay ended up getting the dust in his heart and left Gerda alone. Then one day the Snow Queen came along and took Kay away. Gerda, feeling unhappy, set off into the night to look for him. She went through lots of misery. Finally, she ended up finding him in an ice palace. She sang to him a song that they had sung together until finally he broke free of the mirrors’ magic. They then sped off, leaving the Snow Queen laughing behind them. They arrived safely back home.

Mossycoat - by Philip Pullman

This book is about a young girl called Mossycoat and her story is very similar to the stories of Cinderella on one hand and Donkey's Skin on the other. Her tale is very much a mix of both those traditional tales and I think that the author of Mossycoat got his ideas from those 2 stories. Philip Pullman has written lots of other books all of whic h are very good. His most famous one I believe is called the Northen Lights.

Beowulf and the Monster

Beowulf is of course the hero of the story. But Beowulf faces up against a mysterious monster in the great forest. There is only one way to kill him and that is to trick him. This terrifying monster is called Grendal. Grendal can use his claws and teeth to catch humans. Humans have the most taste. If this monster drinks your blood he will think it tastes like blueberries. Would Beowulf save the whole town?

I like this story beacause I like the sound of the book. I always tried to read a Beowulf.

El soldadito de plomo

In English this is called The Steadfast Tin Soldier. It is a boy's birthday and he's got 15 toy soldiers. One hasn't got a leg. The boy put it in the window and it fell out .Another boy picked it up,made a paper boat,put the soldier into the boat and then sailed the boat down the gutter and into the drain.After an adventure down the drains the little boy gets his boat back. I loved this story because is beautiful.My choice past is when the boy puts the soldier in to the boat.
